Definition
  1. Adverb:
    • Et cetera, and so on, and so forth: Used at the end of a list to indicate that other similar items or examples are included but not explicitly stated. It is a formal, literary term borrowed from Sino-Vietnamese (Hán-Việt).
Usage
  • "Vân vân" is used in written Vietnamese, often in formal, academic, or literary contexts. In modern, everyday writing, it is almost exclusively abbreviated as "v.v." or "v.v...".
  • It is placed at the end of an incomplete list to show continuation.
  • It is considered more formal than the purely Vietnamese phrase " những thứ tương tự" (and similar things).
Usage Examples
  • Adverb:
    • Cửa hàng bán nhiều loại trái cây: táo, chuối, cam, vân vân. (The store sells many types of fruit: apples, bananas, oranges, et cetera.)
    • Anh ấy thích nhiều môn thể thao như bóng đá, bơi lội, chạy bộ, v.v. (He likes many sports such as football, swimming, jogging, etc.)
    • Cuốn sách đề cập đến các chủ đề lịch sử, văn hóa, xã hội, v.v... (The book covers topics like history, culture, society, and so on.)
Advanced Usage
  • In formal enumeration: Often used in official documents, academic papers, or lists to maintain brevity.
    • Các nguyên tắc cơ bản bao gồm: tôn trọng, trung thực, công bằng, vân vân. (The basic principles include: respect, honesty, fairness, et cetera.)
  • With "như" (such as): Commonly follows "như" to introduce examples.
    • ấy biết nhiều ngoại ngữ như tiếng Anh, tiếng Pháp, tiếng Nhật, v.v. (She knows many foreign languages such as English, French, Japanese, etc.)
Variants and Related Words
  • v.v. / v.v...: The standard written abbreviation for "vân vân". The ellipsis (...) is sometimes added.
  • vân vân: A less common variant that includes the conjunction "" (and).
  • vân vi (): An archaic, synonymous term meaning "and so on", from which "vân vân" is derived. It is rarely used in modern Vietnamese.
Synonyms
  • những thứ khác: and other things.
  • những cái tương tự: and similar ones.
  • v.v. (viết tắt): etc. (abbreviation).
Notes on Usage
  • "Vân vân" is not typically used in casual spoken Vietnamese. In speech, people are more likely to say " nhiều thứ khác nữa" (and many other things) or simply trail off with "v.v." when reading a written list aloud.
  • It is important to note that "vân vân" is used for continuing lists of items or concepts, not for concluding narratives or stories.
